Fulton County Marriage License

Fulton County marriage licenses are issued by the Probate Court in Atlanta. The court has three locations where couples can apply for a marriage license: the main downtown office and two service centers in Sandy Springs and College Park. Fulton County is the most populous county in Georgia, and its probate court processes a high volume of marriage license applications each year. Both applicants must appear in person with valid identification to get a marriage license in Fulton County.

Fulton County Probate Court Locations

The Fulton County Probate Court has three offices where you can apply for a marriage license. The main office is in downtown Atlanta. Two satellite service centers in Sandy Springs and College Park handle walk-in applicants. The downtown location takes both appointments and walk-ins. The service centers are walk-in only and do not accept cash.

The North Service Center in Sandy Springs serves residents of north Fulton County including Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, and Milton. The South Service Center in College Park serves south Fulton, East Point, Union City, and the City of South Fulton. Both service centers are cashless, so bring a credit or debit card. No American Express accepted at any Fulton County location.

Marriage License Requirements in Fulton County

Both people must come to the Fulton County Probate Court together. You cannot send someone in your place. If you filled out an online application, bring the printed copy with you. The court requires current identification from each applicant before issuing a marriage license in Fulton County.

Accepted forms of ID for a Fulton County marriage license include:

  • Valid state-issued driver's license or state ID
  • Original or certified copy of birth certificate
  • Valid passport
  • Valid military ID

If you were married before, you must bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate from your most recent previous marriage. The certificate of completion for premarital education must be in hand at the time of applying if you want the reduced fee. All Fulton County Probate Court fees are non-refundable. As of July 1, 2019, you must be at least 17 years old to get a marriage license in Georgia. Blood tests have not been required since 2003.

Any Georgia resident can apply for a marriage license at the Fulton County Probate Court. If neither person is a Georgia resident, you can only get the license in the county where the ceremony will take place. The Fulton County marriage license does not have an expiration date.

Note: Applicants will only be admitted into the office based on their appointment time and place in line at the Fulton County Probate Court.

Fulton County Marriage License Fees

A standard marriage license in Fulton County costs $68.50. This is higher than most Georgia counties. The fee includes one certified copy of the marriage certificate mailed to you after the license is recorded. Couples who present a certificate of completion for a qualifying premarital education program pay $28.50 instead. The program must include at least six hours of instruction and be completed within 12 months of the application.

Certified copies of a Fulton County marriage license cost $10 each. To get copies by mail, send a request to the Records Division at 136 Pryor Street SW, 2nd Floor C230, Atlanta, GA 30303. The downtown office in Atlanta accepts cash and credit cards. The North and South Service Centers are cashless. No location accepts American Express. The 4.5% convenience fee applies to all card transactions at Fulton County offices.

After the Wedding Ceremony

The officiant signs the Fulton County marriage license after the ceremony. The completed license must be returned to the Probate Court within 30 days. Mail it to: Fulton County Probate Court, Attn: License Division, 136 SW Pryor Street, 2nd Floor C230, Atlanta, GA 30303.

Recording takes up to 30 days after the court receives the signed license. You will get your marriage certificate by mail. If 45 days have passed and you have not received your certificate, contact Probate.Licenses@fultoncountyga.gov to check the status of your Fulton County marriage license.

If you plan to hyphenate your last name, you need both the marriage certificate and the marriage application. Keep both documents safe. Changes to the marriage certificate must go through the Fulton County Probate Court where the license was issued.

Courthouse weddings at the Fulton County Probate Court are a quick and affordable option. The ceremony is short. You can bring a small group of guests. This is different from the marriage license itself, which you get at the Probate Court office during regular business hours.

Fulton County Marriage License Online

You can start your marriage license application online through the Georgia Probate Records portal. Fill out the application at home, then print it and bring it to the Fulton County Probate Court. This can save time at the office. You still must appear in person with your ID and payment.

You can also request certified copies by mail or in person at the Records Division. The state vital records office at dph.georgia.gov holds marriage records from June 1952 through August 1996. For records outside that range, the Fulton County Probate Court is your source.
