The South Service Center is a short drive from Union City, just off I-85 in College Park. It takes most people less than 15 minutes to get there. The center is cashless. You must pay with a credit or debit card. Cash and checks are not accepted at this location. A 4.5% convenience fee applies to card payments. No American Express cards are taken.
Union City residents can also go to the main Fulton County Probate Court at 136 Pryor Street SW in downtown Atlanta. That office is farther away but accepts both walk-ins and appointments. It also takes cash and card payments. However, for most Union City residents, the South Service Center in College Park will be the faster and easier choice.
Requirements for a Marriage License in Union City
Both people must show up in person at the Fulton County Probate Court. You need to be at least 18 years old. Each applicant must be of sound mind and not currently married to another person. A 17-year-old can apply only with proof of legal emancipation.
Bring a valid form of photo ID. The court accepts:
- State-issued driver's license or ID
- Valid U.S. passport
- Military ID card
- Original or certified birth certificate
If either applicant was married before, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate for the former spouse. The Fulton County Probate Court needs to confirm the prior marriage is legally over before they issue a new license.
Georgia does not require blood tests. That rule ended in 2003. There is no waiting period. Your license is valid immediately and does not expire. Georgia residents can apply at any probate court in the state. If neither person is a Georgia resident, apply in the county where the ceremony will happen.
Marriage License Fees for Union City Residents

If you complete a premarital education course, the fee drops to $28.50. That is a $40 savings. The course must last at least six hours and be led by a licensed counselor, therapist, or clergy member. Complete it within 12 months of applying. Bring the certificate of completion. Without it, you pay the full amount.
Keep in mind the 4.5% convenience fee on card payments at the South Service Center. On a $68.50 license, that adds roughly $3 more. It is not a huge amount, but worth knowing in advance.
Certified copies of the marriage certificate cost $10 each. You can request extra copies when you return the signed license after the ceremony. Having a few spares helps with name changes at the Social Security office, banks, and the DMV.
After Your Union City Wedding
The officiant signs the marriage license after the ceremony. Return the signed license to the Fulton County Probate Court within 30 days. Do not sit on it. The sooner you return the license, the sooner the court records the marriage and mails your certificate. Delays in returning it lead to delays in getting your certified copy.
Georgia law allows judges, ministers, magistrates, and other authorized officials to perform wedding ceremonies. Online ordinations are generally accepted. If you have any question about whether your officiant qualifies, call the probate court before the big day.
