Carroll County Marriage License Requirements

Both applicants must appear in person at the Probate Court. You cannot apply by mail or send someone in your place. Each person needs a valid photo ID. A driver's license, state-issued ID, birth certificate, or passport will work.

If either person has been married before, you must show proof that the marriage ended. A certified copy of the final divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate is needed. The court checks to verify no prior marriage is still on record.

Here is what to bring to the Carroll County Probate Court:

  • Valid photo ID for each applicant (driver's license, state ID, passport, or birth certificate)
  • Proof of divorce or death certificate if previously married
  • Premarital education certificate for the reduced fee
  • Payment for the license fee

There is no blood test. No waiting period. No residency requirement for Georgia residents. If neither person lives in Georgia, the license must be obtained in the county where the ceremony will take place. The minimum age is 18, with limited exceptions for emancipated 17-year-olds.

Marriage License Fees

A standard Carroll County marriage license costs $56. The reduced fee is $16 for couples who present a premarital education certificate. The course must be at least six hours and taken within 12 months of the application date. Both people attend the program together. A licensed professional or clergy member must teach the course.

You need the certificate in hand when you apply. There is no way to get the discount after you have already paid the full fee. All marriage license fees are non-refundable.

Certified copies of marriage certificates are $10 each. Request them at the Carroll County Probate Court or by mail. For state-level records from June 1952 through August 1996, the Georgia Department of Public Health can help.

After Your Wedding

The officiant signs the license after the ceremony. The completed license must go back to the Carroll County Probate Court within 30 days. Mail it or bring it in person. Once the court records it, your marriage certificate is mailed to you. This takes up to 30 days.

If 45 days go by without getting your certificate, contact the Probate Court at (770) 830-8250. Ask them to check on the status. Usually the problem is an incomplete form or missing signature.
