Rome Marriage License Requirements

Both people must come to the Floyd County Probate Court together. No one can apply on behalf of someone else. Each person needs to be at least 18. Georgia law allows a 17-year-old to apply only with proof of legal emancipation. No one under 17 may get a marriage license in Georgia.

Bring one valid form of ID to the court:

  • State-issued driver's license or ID card
  • Original or certified birth certificate (English translation required if in another language)
  • Valid U.S. passport
  • Military ID

If you were married before, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate. The court needs this to issue a new license. Georgia got rid of blood test requirements on July 1, 2003. You do not need any medical exam.

Georgia residents may apply at any county probate court in the state. If neither person lives in Georgia, the wedding ceremony must take place in Floyd County. There is no waiting period. The license is valid the same day it is issued and does not expire under Georgia law.

Marriage License Fees in Rome

The Floyd County Probate Court charges a standard fee for marriage licenses. Most Georgia counties charge around $56. One certified copy of the marriage certificate comes with the fee. That copy is mailed to you after the court records the license.

If you complete a premarital education course that qualifies, the fee drops to around $16. The course must be at least six hours. It has to be done within 12 months of applying. A licensed counselor, therapist, or clergy member must lead the program. Bring the certificate of completion with you to the court. This can save you $40.

After Your Rome Wedding

Your officiant signs the license after the ceremony. Return the signed marriage license to the Floyd County Probate Court within 30 days. Mail it to P.O. Box 111, Rome, GA 30162, or drop it off in person at the courthouse.

Recording takes up to 30 days. The certified marriage certificate will come by mail after that. If more than 45 days go by and you still have not received it, call (706) 291-5190 to check on the status. Keep your own copy of the signed license until the certified certificate arrives in the mail.
