Savannah Marriage License Requirements
Both applicants must appear together at the Chatham County Probate Court. No one can apply on your behalf. Each person needs to be at least 18. A 17-year-old may apply only with proof of legal emancipation.
You need a valid photo ID. The court accepts:
- State-issued driver's license or ID card
- Original or certified birth certificate (with English translation if needed)
- Valid passport
- Military ID
If you were married before, bring a certified copy of your final divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate. The court will not issue a new license until they see proof that the prior marriage has ended. No blood test is needed. Georgia ended that requirement in 2003.
Georgia residents may apply at any county probate court. If neither person lives in Georgia, you must get the license in the county where the ceremony will take place. Many out-of-state couples choose Savannah for their wedding, so the Chatham County Probate Court is used to handling non-resident applications.
Marriage License Fees in Savannah
The standard fee at the Chatham County Probate Court is $66. This is mid-range for Georgia counties. One certified copy of the marriage certificate comes with the fee and arrives by mail after recording.
With a premarital education certificate, the fee drops to $26. That is a $40 savings. The program needs to be at least six hours and completed within 12 months before applying. A licensed counselor, therapist, or clergy member must run the course. Bring the certificate with you to the appointment.

After Your Savannah Wedding
The officiant signs the marriage license after the wedding. Return the signed license to the Chatham County Probate Court within 30 days. Mail it to 133 Montgomery Street, Room 509, Savannah, GA 31401, or drop it off during office hours.
It takes up to 30 days for the court to record the marriage. Your certified certificate will arrive by mail. If 45 days pass with no certificate, contact the court at (912) 652-7264.
