Processing takes about 20 to 30 minutes at the counter. Arrive at least 45 minutes before the office closes. Parking near the DeKalb County courthouse can fill up, so allow extra time. Chamblee residents can take Buford Highway or Peachtree Boulevard south toward Decatur for a direct route.
Chamblee Marriage License Requirements
Both people must appear at the DeKalb County Probate Court in person. No proxy. Each person must be at least 18. A 17-year-old can apply only with proof of legal emancipation. No one under 17 can get married in Georgia.
Each person needs a valid form of ID:
- State-issued driver's license or ID card
- Original or certified birth certificate (English translation if needed)
- Valid U.S. passport
- Military ID
If you were married before, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree, annulment, or death certificate. The court will not issue a new license without proof that the prior marriage has ended. Georgia has not required blood tests since July 1, 2003. You do not need a medical exam.
Georgia residents can apply at any county probate court in the state. If neither person is a Georgia resident, the ceremony must take place in DeKalb County. The license has no waiting period and no expiration date.
Chamblee Marriage License Fees
DeKalb County charges $56 for a standard marriage license. This includes one certified copy of the marriage certificate, which is mailed after the court records the license.
A premarital education course can reduce the fee to $16. The course needs to last at least six hours and be done within 12 months of applying. A licensed counselor, therapist, or clergy member has to lead it. Bring the completion certificate to the court. That is a $40 savings for Chamblee couples.
Extra certified copies run $10 each. You can order them when you apply or contact the DeKalb County Probate Court afterward. The court takes cash and cards. Ask at the window about any card processing fees.
