Augusta Marriage License
Marriage licenses in Augusta are issued by the Richmond County Probate Court, not by the City of Augusta. All couples who live in Augusta must apply at the probate court on James Brown Boulevard in downtown Augusta. Richmond County is a consolidated city-county government, so the probate court serves the entire area. With more than 206,000 residents, Augusta is the second-largest city in Georgia. The court offers an online application to save time. Both people must still show up in person to pick up the license.

Augusta Marriage License Requirements
Both applicants must appear together at the Richmond County Probate Court. You cannot send someone else on your behalf. Each person must be at least 18 years old. Georgia law does not allow anyone under 17 to get a marriage license. A 17-year-old may apply only with proof of legal emancipation.
Bring one of these forms of ID:
- Valid state-issued driver's license or ID card
- Original or certified birth certificate (English translation if needed)
- Valid U.S. passport
- Valid military ID
If you were married before, you need to bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree, annulment order, or death certificate. The probate court will not issue a new license without this proof. Georgia has not required blood tests since July 1, 2003, so you do not need any medical exam.
You can apply at any county probate court in Georgia if at least one of you is a Georgia resident. There is no waiting period in Richmond County. The license is valid right away once it is issued.
Marriage License Fees in Augusta
The Richmond County Probate Court charges $76 for a standard marriage license. This is one of the higher fees in Georgia. One certified copy of the marriage certificate is included in the fee and will be mailed to you after recording.
Couples who finish a qualifying premarital education program pay $36 instead. The course must be at least six hours long and done within 12 months of the application date. A licensed counselor, therapist, or clergy member must lead the course. Bring the certificate of completion when you apply. That saves Augusta couples $40 on their license.
Additional certified copies cost $10 each. Contact the Richmond County Probate Court to request extra copies. The court accepts cash and credit or debit cards. Check with the office about any card processing fees before you go.
Online Application for Augusta Residents
Augusta-Richmond County offers an online marriage license application. You can fill out your information from home before visiting the probate court. This speeds up the in-person visit. After you fill out the online form, print a copy and bring it with you. Both people still need to appear at the office with valid photo IDs.
The online portal is also accessible through the Georgia Probate Records website. Either way, the form gathers the same basic details like names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. The online application does not replace the in-person visit. It just makes the process faster.
